Ashley Cucumber plants do well in hot, humid weather and are resistant to downy mildew. Vines are very productive and dark-green fruits grow up to 8 inches long. Ashley cucumbers are terrific for slicing.

Cucumbers are crisp and refreshing, and there’s nothing quite like enjoying one fresh from the garden. Whether you want to slice one up for a salad or use a bunch for pickling, cucumbers are definitely a great-tasting garden staple. They are also easy to grow, and fall into two main categories: vine and bush. Vine varieties have a climbing habit that allows you to trellis them to help you save garden space. Bush varieties are compact and are even suitable for container planting.

Planting, Growing, and Harvesting:

Cucumbers like hot weather and plenty of water. Plant cucumbers in a sunny location with well-drained soil and consistent watering. Giving adequate water to cucumbers helps to ensure that they will be juicy and firm by the time you pick them. Cucumbers like a soil pH of 6.0 to 7.0.

Sometimes cucumbers can become bitter. To prevent this from happening, be sure to plant them in fertile soil and minimize stress to the plant. They need enough water and the right temperature (not too extreme) to produce the best possible cucumbers.

Once the cucumbers reach the desired size and are dark green in color (for most varieties), you can harvest them. To do this, simply twist the fruits off the plant or cut.

Recipes/How to Use:

Cucumbers are especially great for adding to all kinds of salads. Enjoy them raw or pickled.

Salad with Sprouts

Ingredients:

2 C. mixed salad greens
1 C. sprouts of your choice
1-2. carrots, thinly sliced
1 cucumber, sliced
1 celery stalk, chopped

Directions:

Toss ingredients together and serve with your favorite salad dressing.
