Broadleaf Batavian Endive, also known as an escarole, type of endive, has broad, lettuce-like leaves that are lovely enough to use as a garnish. Eat this variety in a salad or cooked (such as saut̩ed or added to other recipes). The flavor is great and less bitter than other kinds of endive. The heads get between 12-16 inches. The heart has a buttery flavor and is well-blanched.
