Summer Savory is a fragrant and hardy herb that goes with a variety of foods. The savory plant is bushy and produces lovely pink flowers. The leaves are delicious dry or fresh. Its taste is peppery, minty, and somewhat similar to Thyme.

Summer Savory is often grown as a companion plant with beans, since it helps keep away bean beetles. It does well in a container.

    Planting, Growing, and Harvesting:

Summer Savory is fast-growing and quite hardy. Plant seeds in full sun with well-drained, light soil. Water moderately, but don’t allow the soil to get too dry. You can direct-sow seeds in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. You can expect this plant to grow up to 18” tall.

Start harvesting Savory when it has grown around 6” tall. Cut the stems, and allow them to air-dry. Remove leaves and use them in all kinds of recipes. You can also use the leaves fresh.

    Recipes/How to Use:

Add Savory to dressings, sauces, stuffing, soups, vegetable dishes, stews, and more.

    Summer Savory Chicken

    4-5 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
¼ C. broth (chicken or vegetable)
    1 tsp. olive oil
1 tsp. savory, dry or fresh
    ¼ tsp. garlic powder
    Salt and pepper (to taste)

Place chicken on skillet with oil and broth. Cook over medium heat, bringing to a boil. Reduce the heat and cover, simmering for about 5 minutes. Turn chicken breasts over, add seasonings, and cook a few minutes more (until juices run clear).
