Anise - Herb Seeds
Anise, a flowering annual originating in Asia and the Mediterranean, is often used for its seeds that are fennel-like in taste and possess a strong aroma. Various parts of the plant may be used, however, and some people use the stem and oils from the plant as well as the seeds. Anise flavoring can be found in various candies, desserts, breads, sausages, and drinks such as herbal tea.
The anise plant can grow up to 4 feet tall, and produces white flowers and lacy leaves. You can grow it in the garden as well as in containers.
Planting, Growing, and Harvesting:
Anise is a somewhat fragile plant, so be sure it is protected from high wind conditions. Plant anise in full sun and well-drained soil. Anise handles dry conditions and soil that is less than ideal, but be sure it gets watered twice a week or so.
The seeds of the anise plant can be harvested once the flowers of the plant have faded. Store the seeds in an airtight container to preserve freshness.
Recipes/How to Use:
Anise has a sweet, spicy flavor that adds kick to different recipes. Try tossing anise seeds into salads or soup, or add it to dessert recipes. You can also enjoy is as a tea.
2 cups water
2 ½ tablespoons anise seeds
2 cups of your favorite brewed tea
Sugar or honey, to taste
Instructions: Boil the 2 cups of water, then add the anise seeds and let boil for another 10 minutes. Strain the seeds from the liquid, then discard seeds. Add the brewed tea to the anise liquid, then add sweetener to taste. Serves 4.
