Jared West and Scott Peterson have been longtime partners in many corporate ventures. The corporate life is very fast paced, highly competitive and very litigious. They learned firsthand that things can get very nasty and the pressure is always on to spend less time with their family and more time chasing promotion and another dollar.
As they became busier with business, they grew tired of the stressful corporate lifestyle and decided to turn their hobby of gardening into a business. It became clear to both of them that they needed to change their future. Looking at their hobbies, interests, and upbringing is eventually what led them to seeds.
Scott and Jared grew up in small town Utah and though they didn’t know each other until their adult careers crossed paths, they had nearly identical experiences growing up. They were subjected to many years of (what they felt was) hard child labor in the garden. They didn’t live on farms and their homes were on small postage stamp lots. Their parents were always able to find a willing widow in the neighborhood who would trade vegetables for rent on their large garden plots. Their summer mornings and evenings were spent working on these large garden plots. At this time it was done grudgingly, only to earn free time to play with friends. Looking back, these were some of their best memories and they now see the wisdom of their parents. They have fond memories of working with their families in the garden on warm summer nights and lounging in neighborhood gardens with friends eating cucumbers and tomatoes straight from the vine. They have engineering and business backgrounds but have both loved gardening in their spare time. When they developed a relationship with a local seed expert, they decided that between the three of them, they had the elements to make this work. Their partner has over 25 years of experience growing, researching, and testing different seed varieties. They rely heavily on his expertise. When combined with their business experience, love of gardening, and a good challenge, it worked! The ensuing ride has been an eventful one that has included working in the business with their families, learning at an accelerated pace, and meeting some of the greatest people in world.
We want to provide home gardeners the highest quality seed at a fair price. We do this while maintaining a fun, high integrity workplace and providing exceptional customer service. We are always refining our product mix to suit a large majority of home gardeners. In the future we will grow into a resource where a novice gardener as well as a seasoned gardener can come for seed, supplies, information, and interaction with the gardening community. We are strictly online. We do not produce the conventional color catalog each year. This has helped us keep overhead low and pass the savings on to our customers. It also allows us to quickly address requests in the products and resources we provide. We have been able to involve our families in the business which has been great! We have our older children packing seeds and the smaller ones help clean up (and sometimes make messes) and do all sorts of odd jobs. Our wives have stepped in and become a vital part of the team. Another unexpected pleasure was the opportunity to meet gardeners from so many diverse backgrounds. We have met people who live off-grid to those who garden on their urban apartment roof top. That’s a lot of fun!
