Using Garden Thinnings

If you have had to “thin out” seedlings from the garden to give stronger plants more room to grow, it can be a bit sad to just toss them out. Instead of wasting thinnings, there are a few things you can do with them:

-Eat them:
Young lettuce, spinach, radishes, and beets can be mixed into salads and add a great kick of flavor. This is a great way to enjoy fresh garden produce very early in the season.

-Compost them:
Add thinned-out seedlings to your compost heap to avoid waste.

-Replant them somewhere else:
In some cases, you can save the thinnings that you pull out of the ground and re-plant them in another location successfully. This won’t work so well for root veggies like radishes or carrots, but others such as lettuce and chard can work out fine.
