Flowers for Dry Climates

California Poppy

All because you might live in a dry climate doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy gorgeous flowers! There are many kinds of flowers that generally don’t mind dry conditions, and growing these varieties can save on water, time, and money. Plus, they are beautiful!

The benefits of choosing drought-tolerant flowers in a dry climate are numerous. In particular, you won’t need to worry about keeping the ground in your garden constantly moist, which can be costly monetarily as well as environmentally in places where water needs to be conserved.

A good place to start is by choosing flowers that are native to your area.  If the flower occurs naturally in the wild areas around you, odds are good that it will thrive in your yard as well. Many wildflower varieties are a good choice for this reason. With little effort, these hardy flowers should do well in many dry conditions. If you want to know more about native plants in your region, you can contact your county extension for area-specific information.

Fortunately, there are plenty of beautiful flowers that do just fine in dry areas, so you are sure to have a great garden no matter where you live. Some examples of gorgeous flowers that can handle dry conditions include salvia, coneflower, California poppy, and black eyed Susan. Have fun choosing the perfect flowers for your yard!
