Garden Planning

It can be pretty difficult to think about this year’s garden when the ground is frozen outside. But right now is actually a great time to get started planning your garden and making important decisions about what to grow, where, and how much.

You’ll need to begin with the basics, especially if gardening is new to you. Start by learning about your USDA hardiness zone. This information will let you know what plants will grow best in your area, allowing you to make decisions about what to plant (and when).

Look at how much space you have to allot to a garden, and consider how many people you will be feeding with the garden. With this in mind, you can begin choosing which seeds to plant in your garden space. There are other factors to keep in mind as well, such as your soil type, if your garden is equipped for climbing plants, how much shade and sun the area gets, where to plant seeds so that taller plants don’t block shorter ones from sunlight, and so on.

At this point, it can help to sketch out the garden plot and take some notes. Having a visualization of your potential garden can really help you get a feel for what it can become. Play around with the set-up of the garden on paper until you like what you see, then finalize your plans and order the seeds you will need.

January Recipe

Roasted Parsnips

1 1/2 – 2 lbs parsnips, peeled and cut diagonally into wedges
3 T. olive oil
Salt and pepper, to taste
-Preheat oven to 400F.
-Toss parsnip wedges, oil, and salt and pepper together in a baking dish.
-Cook parsnips for 40 minutes (or until browned), stirring halfway through.
